10 top tips to improve your School’s Instagram page

1.

Pick one filter and use it consistently

60% of the top-performing brands on Instagram use the same filter every time they post. Find one filter which you like and use it consistently. Clarendon, Gingham & Juno are currently the three most popular filters so, if you want to make your life easy, choose one of those and use it every time you post.

2.

Take your photos at the best times of day for natural light

The best time of day to take photos is in the couple hours after sunrise and the couple hours before sunset. Within that time, it is better to shoot after the morning golden hour or before the evening golden hour. If you have to post in the middle of the day, photograph your subject in the shade.

3.

Avoid the front facing camera

The quality of the rear-facing camera far surpasses the front-facing camera. For example, the rear-facing cameras of the iPhone 8 and X are both 12 megapixels while the front-facing camera is only 7 megapixels. That means there is almost twice the image quality on the back facing camera.

4.

Use the Preview app to enhance your photos.

High quality photos get more likes on Instagram & an easy way to make your photos look like they are high quality is by using the “Enhance” feature. This will adjust the saturation and highlight the best part of your photos. In addition, increasing the sharpness will make the subject of your photos pop.

5.

Use the native camera app rather than Instagram

Pictures and videos taken within the Instagram app are lower resolution than those taken with your standard camera app. Take the picture first then import it into Instagram before editing and uploading.

6.

Make use of Geo Tags

Instagram allows you to add a geotag to each photo you upload. This means your photo will be plotted on a map and gives a physical location to show people where your photo was taken and will appear alongside other photos taken at the same location. If your school or business doesn’t yet have a location then go to “Create the location in your Facebook account. “

7.

 Run a photo competition

Photo competitions are a popular way to grow your audience and engage with your existing followers. Combine this with asking users for the best photos of your school and, in order to enter the competition, entrants must add a geotag and hashtag to their photos. This will grow your audience and also give you a library of photos which you can repost over time.

8.

Make use of hashtags

Hashtags are used on instagram to categorize content and make it more discoverable. Anyone who clicks on a hashtag or searches for it will see a page with all the posts tagged with it. How high up on a hashtag page your post appears depends on how popular your post is. If you create a hashtag that is specific for your school then users can tell Instagram to follow that hashtag.

9.

Reply to comments & interact like a real person

Instagram is a social network with conversation at the heart. Treat your Instagram page as a two-way conversation between your school and your audience. Talk like a human being, be consistent in your tone and don’t be afraid to add personality to the way you communicate with each person.
